John Allison

Head of Department

After teaching in Bristol for a few years and coaching ski racing in Canada John spent 10 years teaching at Reeds School in Surrey, 5 of which were as a Housemaster and CCF contingent Commander. In addition to leading the Physics department at Canford he will be coaching Rugby, Hockey and Cricket.

John's hobbies include Skiing, Surfing, Fishing and Cricket.

Richard Carpenter

David Hivey

BSc (University of Liverpool)
PGCE (Edge Hill University)

David joined Canford from Merchant Taylors School and teaches Physics and Maths. He is a tutor in Wimborne House. David sails at an International level and was the European Champion in the Moth class in 2018. He also enjoys walking and climbing. David loves to inspire the pupils to see how Physics explains how every aspect of their lives works in one form or another.

Paul Scott

Paul joined Canford in September 2022. Prior to joining Canford he spent 4 years working in South Korea as a Physics teacher at North London Collegiate School Jeju. Before moving into teaching Paul worked as an Environmental Consultant specialising in environmental technologies. His hobbies include running, cycling, and hiking.

Emma Thornburrow

BSc (University of York), PGCE (University of Bath)

Emma has been at Canford since 2003. As well as teaching Physics across all years she also coaches netball, athletics and a little hockey. A couple of years ago she started a new Community Service initiative linking the hearing and deaf communities. British Sign Language is taught to small groups of pupils and this has proved to be popular helping a number of students in their UCAS applications, especially those applying for medicine. Emma is a tutor in Wimborne House.
