Tony Diprose

Director of Sport
BSc (Hons) (University of Loughborough)

Tony is a former professional rugby player who played for both Saracens and Harlequins in the Premiership. During a 15 year career he was capped 10 times by England, including once as Captain, and was a British Lion on the successful 1997 Tour to South Africa. Tony stayed involved at Harlequins following his playing retirement as part of the management of the club as both a first Team coach and the Academy Director. This period saw Harlequins win the premiership and had a number of academy graduates going on to achieve higher honours. One of his last roles at Harlequins saw him set up the Women's and Girls programme. Tony joined Canford in 2020 and has since been managing the Sports department through the challenging Covid period, whilst also initiating alterations and improvements to the way the sports programme operates at Canford.

Natasha Wilson

Assistant Director of Sport
BSc Hons, Sport Science, PGCE (University of Brighton)

Educated at Millfield, Natasha joined Canford in 2015 following 17 years in school sport at Clayesmore, King Edward’s School, Witley and Epsom College. During her schooldays she was a member of the 1st Swimming, Tennis and Netball teams and represented Dorset Ladies in Tennis and Somerset in Tennis, Cross-Country, Swimming, Athletics and Netball. In her coaching career she has seen pupil success at County, District and National levels. She also teaches Academic PE.

Nick Baugniet

Head of Academic PE, Computing
BA (Ed) Hons Physical Education (Exeter University)

Nick Baugniet joined Canford in 1997 as Director of Physical Education, having previously taught in both England and Australia. He has a degree in PE from Exeter University, teaches A Level and GCSE PE and Shell Computing, and coaches teams in a variety of sports.

He plays the guitar and enjoys mountain walking. He is married to Gill and has two sons.

Emma Bennett

Head of Tennis

Previously the Tennis Coordinator at the University of Bath, Emma has joined the Canford coaching staff permanently this year. As a player Emma achieved ETA and ITF rankings and represents the Dorset senior team. She is now a LTA Level 3 coach working with elite juniors across the South West.

Melissa Clinton

Head of Wellbeing and Physiotherapy Services
BSc (Hons) Brunel University, Physiotherapy, Brunel University
MSc, King's College London

Melissa joined Canford in 2012 setting up the well-established Physiotherapy service. Prior to joining the school, she had a successful career in elite sports physiotherapy including Harlequins Rugby club, the England Women’s rugby team and the Olympic Institute of Sport. Melissa went on to dedicate her efforts in the NHS working at Guy's and St Thomas's NHS Trust where she went on to become Clinical Lead for Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy and a Clinical Lecturer in Physiotherapy at King's College London.

In 2020 Melissa was appointed Head of Wellbeing at Canford. Her passion and skills for managing the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of the pupils is paramount. She continues to work alongside the sports department and staff body to support the pupil education on health and wellbeing.

Matthew Collison

Director of Hockey
BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science, PGCE (University of Bath)

An OC, Matt played International Hockey at England U16 and U18 level, as well playing National League standard Hockey for 15 years for Reading and Team Bath Buccaneers during a successful playing career. Matt is an England Hockey Level 2 Coach, has a Post Graduate Certificate in Education in PE and a BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science. He joined Canford in September 2016, following 12 years at Dauntsey’s where he was Head of Hockey and PE. Matt currently coaches all year groups with a particular focus on the 1st XI girls’ and boys’ teams, and is also a Tutor in Salisbury House and teaches A Level PE.

Alex Cronin

Head of Athletic Development

As Head of Athletic Development, Alex facilitates the healthy maturation and physical development of Canford's pupils. Within this, Alex works alongside the Heads of Sport to develop the physical performance of Canford's sports scholars and senior performance squads, through the delivery of structured Strength and Conditioning programmes. Alex also works closely with the Head of Wellbeing and school Physiotherapist to assist the rehabilitation of pupils returning from injury. Before Canford, Alex worked at Ospreys Rugby as an Academy Strength and Conditioning Coach, while completing his studies at university.

Ian Dryden

Director of Rowing

Ian’s coaching career spans over 20 years, including GB coach at the Junior World Championships in 2009 and 2011, Coupe de la Jeunesse in 2005, 2008 and 2014, Mercantile Rowing Club, Melbourne, Australia, 2001 and 2003 and Assistant Coach, Cambridge University Boat Club,1994-2001.

Steven Ives

Sports Administrator
B.Ed (Hons) NCAA

Former Director of Sport at Moulsford Prep School and Castle Court, Steve joined the staff in September 2009 as a specialist sports coach. He is an OC (twenty five years on the OC committee), and is now the Sports Co-ordinator - organising the holiday sports courses and day-to-day administration. As well as being 1st XI cricket manager and a Tutor in Lancaster House, Steve is also Weekend Activities and Sixth Form Union Co-ordinator.

Matt Keech

Head of Cricket

Matt is a qualified ECB tutor and former professional cricketer. He joined Canford in 2012 having spent 12 years as a professional cricketer with Hampshire and Middlesex. After retiring, he has coached at various clubs around the world including teams in Australia and New Zealand. Closer to home, Matt has been the 1st XI team coach with Bournemouth University and is currently Dorset Head Coach overseeing all youth cricket.

Lucy Read

Head of Netball
BSc Hons (Cardiff Metropolitan University)
iPGCE (University of Buckingham)

Lucy Read, Head of Netball at Canford combines her role with club play for Blades in the National Premier League One. She has recently been in the United Arab Emirates developing netball in schools and clubs. Before she left, she was the Team Bath Dorset Hub Performance pathway coach.

Peter Short

Director of Rugby
BSc (Hons) (University of Loughborough)

Peter joined Canford as Director of Rugby in September 2012. His playing career spanned fifteen years most recently at Exeter Chiefs. At Bath he was part of the winning European Challenge cup squad. Prior to joining Bath, he spent four years with Leicester Tigers, part of the squad winning both the English Premiership and back to back Heineken Cups. He also spent time with RCNM Narbonne in France playing 1st division rugby in the back and second rows.
