Music

Approximately a third of the pupils in the school learn a musical instrument, and many learn two or three. We have pupils at all levels, from beginner through to diploma and beyond, and our visiting teachers are highly qualified, often enjoying a performing career alongside their work as teachers. Many pupils, guided by their teachers, will choose to pursue music exams and results are excellent. It is notable that pupils see Grade 8 or a diploma before they leave as a ‘goal’ and work hard to achieve this: as a result, we usually have at least 25 instruments being played at or beyond this standard in the school at any one time.

Our larger ensembles include groups such as the orchestra or wind orchestra, as well as the ever-popular jazz band, whilst our choirs range from the near 70-strong chapel choir to the auditioned chamber choir of just 16 pupils. Chamber music groups offer scholars and more advanced musicians the opportunity to explore further exciting challenges and repertoire.

Canford offers a number of awards at both 13+ and 16+ for talented musicians.  Whilst there are a great number of pupils in the school who love music and play instruments, music scholars are at the very heart of our music-making. We offer all of our musicians a variety of opportunities, but are keen to tailor our provision to each individual, and this is especially true of music scholars. In addition to leading our larger ensembles, music scholars may participate in more advanced chamber groups, perform solos more frequently, and participate in masterclasses with visiting musicians.

Whilst scholars are fully involved in many musical ensembles and choirs, the way that the Canford day is structured, and the ethos of the school allows them also to pursue other talents and interests. 

For all those considering a music scholarship application, early contact with the music department is advised, and the Director of Music, Christopher Sparkhall, is always happy to meet with parents and potential music scholars and to hold pre-auditions.
